Hey ASID Alabama!

The Auburn University’s Societies is excited to inform you that we have been able to stay connected with our chapter via a safe distance. Recently we had a kick-off meeting via zoom. At this meeting we shared our exciting events planned for the spring, along with having a few gift giveaways. A few upcoming events we have planned include a zoom meeting in March with a panel of speakers, a flower arranging event at a local business in April, and an end of the year event in May. For our March meeting, we are excited to announce that the panel of speakers will be Will Meyer, Gray Davis, Deborah Forrest, Aliya Khan, and Cindy Allen. These events are still subject to change if new campus protocols arise. Our board has been able to successfully connect with our members through engaging social media posts and regular zoom meetings. This has been a time of global transformation and we are so excited to embrace this time of change and excel through new events. Even now, during a pandemic, we have seen an increase in member numbers! Also, both the Societies and Auburn University Interior Design were excited to attend this year’s ASID & IIDA Career Day on February 19th!

Hello all, from the ASID University of Alabama Chapter!

Living in a virtual world for almost a year now, the functionality of a club like ASID is not exactly the same.  However, the Alabama students are excited about the virtual events we have had and are looking forward to this winter!

Our chapter has spent the beginning of this year recruiting new members and sharing how beneficial the connections between state board members and student chapter members can be.  We have recognized the value of the ASID community and want future members to see this too!

Over the last couple of months, we have had the pleasure of hearing from a few designers from the Birmingham area. They have educated us on their career paths, the benefits of being an ASID member and even presented current and past projects.  We thoroughly enjoyed Mary Rooney’s virtual presentation where she gave great advice to our members.

The ASID state board and student chapter officers have been working creatively to create virtual events and contests that interest our student membership!  One fun competition we had was the “What’s on Your Desk?” challenge. For this, student members sent creative photos of their workspace and the most interesting desk won a cash prize!

Friday, February 19th, ASID Alabama presented a virtual Student Career Day.  Student members appreciated this virtual event with keynote speakers, advice from real-life experiences, and door prizes, of course!  Members are also looking forward to the Student Voice and Student Leadership Experiences. The Student Voice is an informal discussion between the state chapter and student chapter members about what students need or want from their ASID membership. The Student Leadership Experience is a conference where new student chapter officers are transitioned into their new position and are further informed about the ASID Alabama chapter as well.

We appreciate the support we have received over the last year and are looking forward to planning future exciting, in-person events for our chapter post-COVID-19.  We are looking forward to the months ahead!

Best,
Sally Hoffman
